5 Tips to Prepare for Sleep Testing

Checklist for sleep testIf your physician suspects you have sleep apnea, you’ll need a sleep test for a diagnosis. You’ll be referred to a sleep center, where you’ll be monitored during the night to detect any abnormalities with your breathing, as well as other information, like your sleep cycle. Don’t worry if you’re nervous about spending the night in an unfamiliar bed. Here are 5 tips to help you prepare for your upcoming sleep study.

1. Review Your Medications Beforehand

Some medications may interfere with the results of your testing, like sedatives. It’s important to review your medications, including supplements and OTC products, prior to your appointment. Your sleep specialist may recommend skipping a certain medication on the day of your sleep test; however, never stop taking any prescribed drugs without first consulting with your physician.

2. Skip Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol are stimulants, which can make it difficult to doze off at night. It’s best to skip your afternoon cup of coffee or tea to ensure you aren’t tossing and turning all night during your sleep test.

3. Don’t Take a Nap

If you’re not getting 7 to 9 hours of rest nightly, fatigue can hit halfway through the day. You might rely on an afternoon catnap, but you’ll want to skip it on the day of your testing. It will ensure you’re tired at bedtime, so you can fall asleep quickly.

4. Pack Your Overnight Bag

Pack comfortable clothing for the night and an outfit to change into in the morning. You can also bring along your favorite pillow and blanket. Don’t forget to pack any necessary medications or toiletries. If you read before calling it a night or enjoy another calming activity, you can bring it with you.

5. Stick to Your Bedtime Routine

Although you’ll be spending the night away from home, try to stick to your usual evening routine, like going to sleep at the same time. If you take a shower before bed, don’t use any lotions, gels, or creams because they can interfere with the sensors that will be placed on your skin.

The information for your study will be sent to your physician, and they’ll inform you of the results. If sleep apnea is confirmed, they’ll recommend an appropriate treatment, which can include:

  • CPAP: A CPAP machine is the most traditional treatment for sleep apnea. A gentle stream of air pressure is delivered through a mask worn over the nose to stop breathing disturbances.
  • Oral Appliance: A custom-fit device moves the tongue or jaw into a more comfortable position to keep the airways open.

A sleep study is your first step to a better night’s rest. With a little preparation, you’ll calm your nerves and sleep peacefully.
