An assortment of healthy foods.

Every night, millions of people miss out on countless hours of sleep because of sleep apnea—and even worse, many more cases go completely undiagnosed! But sleep apnea is a serious condition that can lead to severe health consequences if left to progress, and professional treatment is often one of the best ways to mitigate its symptoms. That said, your diet can also heavily impact your sleep apnea! Here’s more from your sleep dentist about this connection and what foods you should and shouldn’t eat to help with your symptoms.

What Foods Can Worsen My Sleep Apnea?

Believe it or not, there are several foods that can actually make your sleep apnea worse! Here are some foods that you should avoid if you suffer from the condition:

  • Bananas – Although bananas are a great source of fiber and potassium, they also increase mucus production in your mouth and throat, which can make your breathing problems associated with sleep apnea even worse.
  • Fatty meats – Eating too much fatty red meat, pork, and lamb can cause inflammation in various parts of your body that increases your risk of cardiovascular and respiratory health conditions.
  • Dairy products that are high in fat – Dairy items like whole milk, cream, and certain cheeses can increase your mucus production, similarly to bananas. They can also lead to weight gain, which is one of the leading risk factors for sleep apnea.

Are There Any Foods That Can Promote Healthy Sleep?

Fortunately, there are also foods that promote good rest! Consider implementing the following into your diet:

  • Fruits & vegetables with melatonin – While some people opt for melatonin vitamins, many fruits and vegetables also naturally contain melatonin. Consider snacks like cherries, corn, asparagus, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – These acids help your body produce melatonin, which is a natural sleep enhancer. Salmon, tuna, and shrimp are all good options.
  • Foods that contain tryptophan – This amino acid triggers your body to create serotonin, which is eventually converted into melatonin. Turkey is known to be loaded with tryptophan, as well as chicken, fish, beans, nuts, and several vegetables.

Your sleep apnea won’t simply go away on its own; but that doesn’t mean you’re helpless against it! There are many adjustments you can make to your diet to help mitigate your symptoms and get back to getting a good night’s sleep.
