4 Tips for Stress-Free Traveling with a CPAP

Man carrying luggageIt’s easy to follow your sleep apnea regime at home, but it can be more difficult to commit to your treatment when you are traveling. If you are worried about inconvenience or embarrassment because of your CPAP, don’t leave your machine at home. Here are 4 tips to make traveling with sleep apnea stress-free.

1. Check Airline Guidelines

A CPAP machine is a medical device, which means there shouldn’t be any issue bringing it through airport security. However, many airlines have strict rules and regulations. As a result, it’s best to check with the airline before you leave. If possible, pack it with your carry-on to ensure it doesn’t get lost with your luggage. It’s also a good idea to bring a copy of your prescription with you just in case.

2. Check the Power Supply

If you will be heading out of the country, be sure to check the power supply. You may need an adapter to plug in your CPAP. You may also want to pack an extension cord in case there isn’t an outlet near your hotel bed.

3. Pack Your Cleaning Supplies

Pack all necessary cleaning products and your storage case. Be sure any liquids or cleaning solutions abide by the airline’s size and quantity guidelines. Pack everything carefully to ensure nothing gets damaged along the way.

4. Consider an Alternative

If you are concerned about traveling with your CPAP, ask your sleep dentist for an oral appliance. The small custom-fit appliance is effective in treating mild-to-moderate cases of obstructive sleep apnea. The appliance repositions your lower jaw and tongue forward to prevent an obstruction in the upper airway.

You won’t have to deal with hoses, wires, or power supplies. An oral appliance is a comfortable, convenient alternative to a bulky CPAP machine. You can carry it in your pocket or carry-on, so you don’t have to worry about it getting lost or misplaced. It’s a small, discreet solution to breathe better for a good night’s sleep.

Sleep Peacefully While Traveling

It’s tempting to ditch your CPAP for a few days to avoid the hassle, but your symptoms will come back. Even just one night can cause interruptions in your breathing. Each depletion of oxygen will strain your body, increasing your risk of several health issues, like cardiovascular disease. Not to mention, you’re likely to feel tired and grumpy, which is no way to spend your vacation.

You can abide by your treatment plan with a little preparation. If you prefer to leave your CPAP at home, don’t wait to contact your sleep dentist to see if you are a candidate for an oral appliance. They’ll create the personalized device you need to feel your best.
